Probably the funniest, most imaginative since The Far Side. The art work which seems simplistic, is really very subtle and the huge eyes and horrified expressions are priceless.

This exemplifies the crazy, mixed up world we live in. Sometimes the truth cuts to the bone and almost hurts. We all can put names of people we know to the characters.

Pearls is an anomaly in the modern comic strip business. The crude drawings and borderline unimaginative characters (a pig named Pig, a rat named Rat, etc.) shouldn't be so endearing, but it's the situations they're placed in that make them so oddly lovable. Author Stephan Pastis frequently relies on jokes so stupid and puns so bad that they make you want to cringe, yet at the same time you can't help but smile because his brand of humor is so unique. One of Pastis' most unusual trademarks is parodies of other comic strips; Pearls frequently crosses over into the competition's territory and writes new punchlines, often about how much those other comics suck. But Pastis takes it as well as he dishes it out, using himself as an occasional character who is largely disrespected and blatantly ignored by his own creations. Pearls surely isn't for everyone; it's a modern comic strip for a modern age and stands out among the rest not because it has to, but because it WANTS to.
